It is a dreaded condition that people, regardless of age, wish would not happen to them. Dementia puts a person to a situation where he becomes helpless and vulnerable that he would need to have another person to care for him.

A brain disorder, dementia is characterized by loss of memory. People with this condition find it hard to recall things and have a hard time coping with daily routine. Aside from this, learning and communicating can weigh them down since any mental activity can become burdensome and in more serious cases – impossible.

Though dementia is commonly irreversible because destroyed brain cells can never be revived anymore, there are still some treatable cases. However the focus here is not the recovery or restoration of memory anymore, but more on the slowing or stopping the loss of more brain cells.

How can children suffer from depression? Aren’t they active and lively all the time? Don’t they just need a nice toy or sweet lollipop to perk them up?

Yes, it seems puzzling but true. Children may suffer from depression. The symptoms however may vary, and if left undiagnosed, they carry these symptoms on to their growing up years and eventually, to adulthood.

Children suffering from depression easily get irritable and angry. They may also cry a lot and show loss of interest in normal activities of children.

Depression in children usually occurs when they reach 12 for it is in this age when they begin to develop awareness of themselves, of others and of life. Children from troubled families are commonly the ones who suffer from this syndrome.

Caution for joggers

Joggers, and especially marathon runners, in a hot, humid-climate such as is found in many areas of the Far East, face additional risks. Circulation of blood to internal organs, having been diverted to the muscles, becomes very deficient. Because of lack of blood flow to the kidneys, the blood pressure can go dangerously high. Deficient blood flow to the liver results in insufficient nutrition to the liver cells. The blood may clot too easily, thus occasionally contributing to a heart attack, and even death.

A more frequent complication, especially in hot, humid countries, is hyperthermia (over-heating). The body becomes so hot that even brain damage may result.

Beware of too much sun

sunbathing
The sun gives us a lot of benefits. For one, its invisible infrared waves provide us warmth. Also, the heat helps our gardens grow and most importantly, we get our main source of Vitamin D from its ultraviolet rays.

But although the mighty sun furnishes us with so much goodness, too much of it can be harmful to our environment and to our health. A word of caution to sun lovers: sunshine in moderation is good, but sunbathing to an excess is bad.

Skin cancer is caused by excessive exposure to the sun’s heat. This type of cancer is more common among light-skinned persons because the skin pigment (melanin) in darker-skinned persons filters out some of the harmful ultraviolet light from the sun.

One’s health state encompasses the totality of a person. Being healthy means being physically, mentally, emotionally — and yes — socially fit.

Maintaining a healthy social life helps a person in developing his socialization skills and enables him to take part in activities that promote personal growth. By engaging in group activities a person’s mind is kept active thus causing the brain to produce chemicals that help sustain pleasant mood.

Joining interactive groups is likewise beneficial to an individual for it makes him understand the virtues of cooperation, compassion, diligence and sharing, all of which are essential in supporting a fit and well rounded lifestyle.

Sleep and the need for it

“I haven’t slept for 30 hours,” a friend proudly told me one day, as if it is anything to be proud of.

Lack of sleep causes many disruptions to the normal functioning of the body. If you have not slept for 30 hours just like my friend I mentioned above, you are more likely to become cranky, jittery and worse, you may lose your sense of reasoning.

More kids today stay up late at night to watch television or spend hours in front of the computers. These kids may not yet feel the negative effects of their staying up late now but interestingly, there are already existing post-conditions caused by their bad habit. Not having enough sleep can result to slower mental acumen and sluggishness, often manifested in school performance.

Many people commit the mistake of skipping their breakfast. In their hurry to get to their place of work or school on time, they turn their backs to the most important meal of the day.

Eating breakfast should be made a cardinal rule in everyday life. Nutrition experts attest that people who eat their breakfast function much better throughout the day. School children do better in school because they are more alert, retentive and active.

Not missing breakfast also leads to health benefits. Since you start the day with a properly nourished body, your immune system is able to work well to efficiently guard you from diseases.

The Benefits of Home Health Care

As they grow older, most people want to continue living independently in their own homes. They hope to remain self-sufficient in their familiar surroundings. But all too often certain situations - a sudden illness, a chronic condition, and the very fact of aging - affect people’s ability to care for themselves and manage their daily living, creating health and safety concerns for their families. Since seniors overwhelmingly prefer to be cared for at home rather than be placed in a nursing home or other facility, their adult children often become their primary caregivers, taking on all the responsibilities that go with keeping up the quality of their parents’ lives. But when caring for themselves becomes progressively too difficult, or when the responsibilities of adult children become overwhelming, it is time for both seniors and their families to consider professional home health care.
